Tongariro Alpine Crossing — volcanoes and Emerald Lakes
A volcanic North Island walk
Tongariro Alpine Crossing passes through volcanic valleys, Red Crater and the Emerald Lakes area. This challenging one-day walk of about 20 km in Tongariro National Park is much more than a short stroll from a car park.
Fit it into your itinerary
Allow a dedicated day while travelling through the central North Island, with an overnight stay in Taupō, Tūrangi or National Park Village. This is a one-way track: arrange transport to the start and a pickup at the other end. A vehicle transfer does not replace an alpine guiding service.
Time to allow
In summer allow roughly 7–8 hours walking, plus transport and preparation. Avoid scheduling another major excursion that day. In winter conditions DOC advises allowing about 9 hours for the walk itself.
Bookings and conditions
DOC recommends a track booking for all visitors; a booking is needed for shuttle or guided-walk services. Check weather, track conditions and volcanic alerts. From May to October alpine skills and equipment are needed; DOC recommends going with a guide.
Respect the place
The mountains and lakes are sacred to local Māori. Keep out of the lakes, stay on the track and check current access restrictions through DOC.
