Te Anau — a base for exploring Fiordland

Te Anau sits on the eastern shore of its namesake lake. It is a useful overnight base before a Milford Road trip, with accommodation, food and visitor information for Fiordland.

What to include

A lakefront walk, the Te Anau Glowworm Caves experience with its boat journey, and a suitable short regional walk. Te Anau is also associated with the Kepler, Milford and Routeburn tracks, but a multi-day hike needs separate booking and preparation.

Lake views

Visitor Centre to Upukerora River Track — a lakefront route with views across the water to the Murchison Mountains. Choose a short central section rather than committing to the entire walk.

Fit it into your itinerary

One itinerary option is Queenstown → an overnight in Te Anau → a separate Milford Sound day. Add Manapouri as another stop; fit Doubtful Sound around the operator’s programme from Manapouri.

Time to allow

Half a day for the town and shore; 1–2 nights as a planning allowance when visiting Milford Sound. Add time for tours and hikes.

Before you travel

Check SH94, the forecast, cruise check-in and current DOC alerts. Cave tours, cruises and hut stays require separate arrangements.
