Domestic flights and airports in New Zealand
Domestic flights connect distant regions and the North and South islands. A private-driver itinerary can include an airport drop-off and an onward pickup after landing, arranged as separate travel legs.
Airlines
Air New Zealand, Jetstar and Air Chathams. Regional carriers supplement these networks. Check direct-flight availability with the airline for your date; not every airport has a direct service to every other airport.
Major airports for itinerary planning
Regional destinations
Useful regional airports include Kerikeri, Hamilton, Rotorua, Taupō, Tauranga, Napier, Gisborne, Nelson, Blenheim, Dunedin and Invercargill. Tourism New Zealand provides a fuller directory and airport links.
Fit it into your itinerary
For a South Island road trip, match the arrival airport to the start and departure airport to the finish. Confirm the flight number, terminal and luggage with your driver.
Time to allow
Allow for the full door-to-door leg: transfer, check-in, flight, baggage collection and pickup. Flight time alone is not the total travel time.
Before you travel
Check cabin and checked-baggage allowances, check-in deadlines, boarding identification and connection buffers. For separate tickets, confirm whether bags need to be collected and checked in again.
