New Zealand scenic train routes
Great Journeys New Zealand operates three principal scenic rail routes. Treat the train journey as part of the holiday itself, with changing landscapes outside the window and a route shaped around booked departures and connections.
Northern Explorer
Auckland–Wellington. Travel through Waikato and the central volcanic plateau, with the Raurimu Spiral and tall viaducts among the distinctive sections. Allow a dedicated travel day for the full route.
Coastal Pacific
Picton–Christchurch via Blenheim and Kaikōura. Marlborough vineyards give way to Pacific coastline and the Kaikōura ranges. Plan a whale-watching stop around suitable departures, with an overnight stay if needed.
TranzAlpine
Christchurch–Greymouth via Arthur’s Pass. The journey links the Canterbury Plains, Waimakariri valley, Southern Alps and West Coast. A one-way journey and a same-day return need different itineraries.
Fit it into your itinerary
Choose the rail leg first, then arrange transfers to the station and pickup after arrival. Plan any inter-island crossing separately.
Time to allow
Allow a train travel day for a full route; check the dated timetable for the actual duration.
Before you travel
Check operating days in each direction, departure station, check-in, baggage, accessibility and ticket terms. Avoid tight ferry or flight connections.
